Planning a family night each week is a great way to reconnect with each other after a stressful week of school and work. Many families are discovering that this is the perfect way to communicate when family members are busy with other activities during the week. Saturday or Sunday evenings are often the best days for families to hold their family night. What is family night? It is a way for families to spend time with each other in a meaningful way. If the lines of communication at your home have fallen down, this is an excellent opportunity to reach out to each other again. All families will approach the planning of this special evening differently. Some ideas for family night include planning a special meal or dining out at a special restaurant. Younger children can help plan the menu for meals at home and older children can help prepare the food. Fun ideas for activities after dinner include renting or watching movies together (complete with popcorn), playing board games, scrapbooking or any other activity that can be enjoyed by all family members. Many families enjoy making cookies or other desserts as one of their activities. Adults can enjoy video games and it gives parents a chance to check out what types of games their children are playing. Taking an interest in things that your children enjoy can bring your closer together. Why not make family night an evening out on the town? During the summer, attend an outdoor concert or go to a drive-in movie. Older children may enjoy going to the movies, playing outdoor games such as putt-putt golf or try go-cart racing. Small children like going to the park or an indoor play area with plenty of slides and tunnels to crawl around in. As a parent it is a must that you enjoy these activities with your children and not just sit on the sidelines watching. The purpose of a family night is to interact with each other. Occasionally, parents of teenagers may have trouble initiating family night. Tweens and teens have their own circle of friends and they may be reluctant to change their evening or weekend schedule. Involve them in the planning of their family night and you may find that they take it over entirely. Try planning a family night in your home and reap the rewards of your family becoming closer than before.
