If whining is an issue in your home, consider a brief class in Radio 101. A radio signal is broadcast by a transmitter that is set at a very specific signal. The reason for this is so that a person who wants to listen to that signal has to be tuned to the right frequency or place on the dial. Explain to your child that they are like the transmitter of a radio signal. What they have to convey is very important, but they must broadcast at the right frequency. Why? If children are the transmitter, then parents are the receivers. When the child does not transmit on the right frequency the parent has trouble understanding what is being transmitted. So, the next time your child whines just say, “I know you have something important to transmit, but you might check your frequency. I’m just not receiving you very well.” This might just help your child learn to recognize when they are whining.
