    Exercise Before and After Pregnancy

    By Charlotte Gerber

Finding out you are pregnant is one of the greatest thrills of your life. Our thoughts often drift to naming the baby, getting a nursery ready and buying a new wardrobe for the inevitable changes in our figure. All too often we forget that we are eating for two, but usually not for many more. A healthy diet and exercise is important for both you and your growing baby. The same is true after your pregnancy in order to give you the energy that you will need in order to keep up with your little one.

Exercise is an important part of your health care regime. If you didn’t exercise before your pregnancy it is best to get the okay to start a program from your physician. Simple stretching exercises can go a long way in keeping your body limber, especially if this is your first pregnancy. Low impact exercises that can help you both before and after the big event include Pilates, yoga and gentle swimming. Many women that weren’t very active before their pregnancy prefer swimming. The water helps to relieve pressure points, especially those in their backs, due to carrying a child.

Exercises that can cause trouble at a gym include using an elliptical machine, stair climber and treadmill. This is caused by your center of balance being off, especially late in your pregnancy. Many women who are injured during their pregnancy often have accidents because of dizziness and the inability to see their own feet. If you enjoy walking try doing it on level ground at a local park. Some women also find it easier to walk late in their pregnancy when they have a sturdy stroller to push (not the umbrella style) because it helps them keep their balance.

If you were active before your pregnancy and your doctor gives you the high sign, continue exercising as long as it isn’t uncomfortable. Some women have been able to hike, jog and climb right up until the week of their delivery. Keeping all of your pre-natal appointments with your physician will help you spot any potential problems in your exercise program.

The benefits of exercise include maintaining a healthy weight during your pregnancy and the ability to take off the extra weight quickly after your delivery. Continuing an exercise program after the delivery will also help you sleep better and ease the tension of a busy day with your new baby.
