“A picture is worth a thousand words“ is an old adage. Photographs of special occasions keep memories alive forever. A wedding is one such occasion for which, the precious moments of the event need to be frozen in time, and treasured forever. It is, therefore, important to choose a good photographer for this event. Photographers can be short-listed from advertisements in newspapers, TV or Internet. It is best to engage a known photographer or one, who is referred to by someone else. For selection, three major considerations are style, cost and personality of the photographer. Photography being an art, each photographer’s work style varies. For classical and formal portraits, a traditional photographer is preferred. For ‘action’ coverage, such as in weddings, a photojournalist should be the choice. A perusal of portfolio of previous works helps in assessing professionalism, performance and capability. Do ensure that the same person, whose portfolio has been approved, shoots at your function. The costs should be settled before engaging a photographer. The cost will depend on the technology used. It may involve still photography or videos, digital or analog recording, audio/music dubbing, special effects, or a mix of all these. Deliverable media, such as prints, films, tapes, VCDs or DVDs, determine the overall cost. The prices of each of these, and also the cost of additional prints of different sizes should be clarified. Since these photos will be a treasured possession, it is advisable not to compromise on quality for cost consideration. A contract stating all the agreed terms and conditions should be drawn in advance. For legal safety, do check if the photographer is insured. The personality of the photographer is equally important. As a professional requirement, he should preferably be tall. He should have a pleasing personality, and a friendly nature. He should be social and uninhibited to establish instant rapport with guests, and family members. His academic and social background can be an asset in this. His ability to mingle with the family shall help in clicking better pictures, and to catch actions of emotional moments, such as cake cutting, ring exchange, first dance etc. The photographer should be physically fit, able to cope up with stress, and work deftly to capture swift movements. He should be innovative and intuitive, without being showy or dominating. The photographer needs to be briefed in advance with a schedule of ceremonies. He should understand the importance of each ceremony to be able to allocate scope of coverage accordingly. He should also identify the key personnel to be covered. (Else, you may land up with a plethora of useless photographs/ coverage!) Chronology and continuity are of prime essence for the results to appear as one continuous flowing story without a break. Intelligent editing is, therefore, of vital importance. Selection of a photographer for a wedding has to be a well-considered decision. After all, you want a lasting ‘picture perfect’ priceless treasure, which you shall cherish years later in your nostalgic moments.
