    Get Fit For Spring

    By Charlotte Gerber

With spring right around the corner, isn't it time you started thinking about fitting into those short-sleeved tops and shorts? If you haven't already made an exercise routine as part of your New Year's resolution, consider beginning one now.

Did you know that you could become fitter by just walking 10,000 steps a day? Exercise doesn't have to mean lifting weights and spending your afternoon and weekends on an exercise machine. If you don't have any idea how many steps a day you are already taking, purchase an inexpensive pedometer. This handy little device measures how many steps you take in a given day. After you get an idea of your average steps per day, try increasing them slowly by parking your car a little farther away from your workplace or taking a walk after lunch or dinner. Walking increases your metabolism and helps to burn off extra pounds you may have gained during the holidays.

Perhaps you don't really enjoy taking a walk because you live in a busy city or a rural one. Swimming is an excellent exercise, especially if you have arthritis or other joint discomfort. Many public pools and community centers offer water aerobics classes for beginners as well as advanced classes. This will help you increase your metabolism and get you fit and toned in time for that new summer wardrobe. You could also just swim laps instead of taking classes if you are a disciplined individual.

Many people swear by Pilates or Yoga. These stretching activities can help you tone and slim your body without rigorous exercise. These activities also maximize your exercise time and don't require that you practice them every single day. In addition, all you need to begin these activities is a clear area on your floor and an exercise mat. Many television stations, such as Fit TV have classes you can follow along with all day long. You can also purchase many Pilates and Yoga videos from your favorite retail store or you may borrow them from your public library..

Dancing is another great activity that can get your heart rate up and make you svelte faster. Check out your local dance or community center to see what classes they offer. Belly dancing, ballet and tap classes can be a lot of fun, as well as giving you an opportunity to meet new people and make friends. Dancing at home has its advantages. Purchase some dance videos or borrow a few from your local public library and start dancing! Kirstie Alley claims this has helped her lose those 70 extra pounds; it could work for you too!

Finally, don't forget a change in your diet could be the key to helping you lose those extra pounds. But before you totally overhaul your diet, consider just changing a few little things first. You'll be more likely to stick with changes if they aren't drastic. Try using Splenda or another sugar substitute instead of granulated sugar, drink 2% or skim milk instead of whole milk and limit the number of sodas that you drink each day. If the average person consumes 40 pounds of sugar a year, think of how much weight you could potentially lose, just by limiting your sugar intake.

Remember, small changes in your activity and diet can make a big change in your waistline. Just be sure to check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise routine or radically changing your diet.
