In this economy, everyone is trying to save money! It seems that one of the hardest places to save is the family grocery bill. While it may be difficult, there are many ways to minimize your grocery expenses. Listed below are 7 surefire ways to shave money from your account in order to be saved.

Shop the Sales, Eat the Sales

If you don’t get the Sunday paper, you should start. Coupons and sale ads pay for the fee many times over. In most Sunday papers, grocery stores advertise their weekly sales. Use this as a guide to plan your week’s menu. If pork roasts are buy one get one half off, purchase two, prepare one and freeze the other for later use.

Go Generic

A huge savings often exists between generic and brand name products. Some you may feel comfortable with, while others you may notice an actual quality difference between the two. That’s okay. Integrating a few generics will save you money here and there, overtime building into a great savings.

Clip Coupons

Coupons can add up to serious savings if you use them the right way. Do clip coupons for the things that you frequently use. If you don’t use a product, don’t clip the coupon. If you do this, you will purchase items you don’t need while spending money you don’t have.

Enroll in reward programs that are offered by manufacturers. Have a baby? Some baby food manufacturers offer coupons when a certain number of UPCs are mailed in.

Find stores that double and triple coupons. Print coupons from online sites and pay attention to the coupons that are placed in each aisle. There are tones of savings out there!

Eat Leftovers

In addition to sale ads and coupons, you can reduce your grocery bill by minimizing waste. If you make a roast or soup in abundance, don’t hesitate in freezing half for later use. Have left over mashed potatoes? Make potato cakes the next morning for breakfast. Use leftovers in creative ways. Pack it up for you lunches.

Process At Home

The more processed something is, the more expensive it probably is. Instead of purchasing pre-cut pineapple, purchase a whole one and slice at home. Cut up vegetables for a snack instead of purchasing pre-cut items.  Instead of buying snacks in small bags, divide them up yourself into plastic bags or plastic ware. It may not save you time, but it will save you money in the long run.

Make a List and Don’t Go When Hungry

Before you head out to the grocery store, make a list, check it twice and then stick to it! Purchase groceries weekly, not daily or as needed and keep to the items on the list. In addition, entering the grocery store hungry is begging for the over purchase of food goods. “Mmm, that would taste good right about now,” you think and before you know it, you are up to your eyeballs in sweets and snacks that your budget or waste line may not be able to afford!

Obtain the Reward Card

Most grocery stores offer some sort of an MVP, VIC or other reward program in which you can save with the stores card. Not only can you save dollars off of your bill, but you can receive coupons or even be entered into special sweepstakes through the use of the card. Best part, it generally costs you nothing to be a member.

It may take you several different tricks to get your bill lower, but the good news is, it can be done. Monitor your spending over a couple of months and see if even more fat can be trimmed from your grocery bill or if you need to look elsewhere to save in your budget.  You can do it. Good luck!
